Purpose
The 5th International
Conference on Forest Vegetation Management: Useable Science, Practical
Outcomes and Future Needs will be held from June 20-24, 2005 at
Oregon State University Corvallis, Oregon. This is one of the premier
conferences for those around the world who are interested in both
the practice and science of forest vegetation management. It is
one of the very few meetings that brings together forest vegetation
management experts from around the world.
Vegetation management
practices are widely used to reduce undesirable effects of competing
vegetation on survival and growth of crop tree species. Important
issues in vegetation management include: understanding the nature
of competitive interactions, identifying treatment need, and selecting
suitable and effective management or treatment options. Selection
of management or treatment options must include consideration of
opportunities for enhancing stand growth and yield and the potential
impacts of the available treatments. While herbicides are generally
the most cost-effective tools used in forest vegetation management,
there is often controversy surrounding their use.
This conference
will bring together researchers and practitioners from all over
the world including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Japan, Korea,
New Zealand, and North and South America. If your country is concerned
about forest vegetation management then this is the conference to
attend in 2005. If you have ideas or information to share, we encourage
you to to present a paper or poster (see Call for Papers).
Oregon State
University is a beautiful place to be in June of any year. Forestry
is a big industry in the Pacific Northwest and conference participants
will have ample personal opportunities before or after the conference
to visit sites like Mt St. Helens in Washington State and the great
Redwoods of Northern California. Oregon contains vast forested areas
from the Pacific coast to the Cascades where active forest management
takes place over a wide spectrum that include federal, state and
private ownerships. Forest vegetation management is very much a
part of silviculture in the Pacific Northwest.
